Lex Braes and Freya Powell collaborated to create Loving Is Repeating, an accordion book that explores the structure of a memory. Every time a memory is recalled it changes slightly, new details are added, or moments fade away. Starting with In Swansea, an early photograph by the 19th century Welsh photographer Reverend Calvert Jones, Braes and Powell explore the unraveling of a memory. Through a short, repeating text and the constant re-drawing of the town scene in Jones’ photograph, the book moves from an understood memory into abstraction.
Freya Powell is a British born, Queens-based interdisciplinary artist who has shown across the U.S. and in Europe. Powell earned her M.F.A. (2012) from Hunter College, NY and her B.A. from Bard College, NY. She was awarded a William T. Graf Travel Grant to take audio recordings in England and is currently in residence at the Bronx Museum through the AIM program.
